A bit of celebration for Portuguese Water Dogs was called for at the Albuquerque, New Mexico, cluster of dog shows, May, 2013.

Dr. Gail Clark’s Portuguese Water Dog Shrimp Earned her UDX Legs Number 7 and Number 8. Her young PWD boy Frigate won a Rally Leg and has taken two breed Reserves in Conformation.

Karen Nutter’s PWD Yacht took First Place in Utility A to earn her fist UD Leg.

Mya’s First Rally Trial – First Place!

Mya, the Australian Shepard owned by Shelby Enke competed in her first trial at Mountain States Dog Training Club Obedience and Rally Trials on May 11, 2013 at Adams County Fairground near Brighton, Colorado. Mya and Shelby got a perfect score of 100 in Rally Novice B to take First Place.

Kirsten Bayne’s Golden Retriever Aspen (Aspen D Cleese) crossed over the Rainbow Bridge in May, 2013. Aspen was a gracious and happy obedience dog with a sweet personality and quiet disposition.

Rest in peace Baron

Baron (Gun N Tux Baron My Boy), the Yellow Labrador Retriever owned by Kim Kreutzfeldt passed away on April 2, 2013, after 15 years of a wonderful life. Baron was lucky enough to follow John and Kim’s family to Switzerland where they lived for a year. Baron was a sweetie.

Beanie Baby 1997-2012

American Cocker Spaniel Beanie (Katchu’s Beanie Baby UDX RA) passed over the Rainbow Bridge in October, 2012. Beanie was Jon Richards’ first obedience dog and went from a rebellious puppy to earn her Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) Title. Beanie really loved Dr. Gail Clark.

When this picture was taken in 2004, Beanie was in the Top 10 Cocker Spaniels in the U.S. in AKC Obedience. Beanie earned her UDX title in August, 2008.

JH & Sobe March Class

After the first class I felt overwhelmed and thought the amount of material presented might be too aggressive. It was clear to me in the subsequent classes that the first class presented a lot of the essential building blocks for what was to come. In the four weeks Sobe and I were exposed to many helpful concepts and information, including using the right equipment (boy what a difference that makes!!), how to deal with rampant unleashed dogs that charge toward you, the problems with dog parks, and insight into what your dog is thinking and how the dog trains you to accept its bad behaviors if you let it.

I have taken two other puppy kindergarten classes in town also with 3 month old field trial black Labradors with VERY high energy. This has been the most effective and fun class to date. I love that while training is taught and the serious nature of having a well-trained dog emphasized, the fun and silliness of training the dogs is also clearly demonstrated. I especially like the commands that are very ‘family’ friendly such as ‘settle’ for informal situations as compared with ‘stay’, and the option to teach the dog that when invited it is OK to jump up for a hug. It is clear that all trainers greatly love and enjoy the company of dogs without the need to be aggressive and overly domineering with the dogs. This makes the class extremely enjoyable.
